How to Floss in Nashville, TN
Flossing your teeth should always be a part of your daily oral hygiene routine. It is a simple process that takes only a few extra minutes; however, statistics indicate that less than half of adults floss every day. Regardless of how well you brush, tiny food particles become lodged in-between teeth and at the gum line when chewing. Flossing daily will remove the food and plaque, which will help preserve your natural teeth, freshen your breath, and aid in the prevention of cavities and gum disease.
Dental floss is designed from plastic into the form of a string. It is available in different thicknesses depending on the space between teeth, and there are also varieties that are flavored and covered in wax. The wax often makes it easier to slide the floss between the teeth, especially in tight or hard-to-reach spaces. The flavored coating is primarily used as a breath freshener.
If you’re not currently flossing regularly, when you first begin, you may experience bleeding gums. Generally, this stops within a few days and is an indication the flossing is improving the health of your gums. However, if the bleeding continues, contact your dentist immediately.
Flossing should be done before brushing so the remaining bacteria and bits of food will be washed away. When flossing, use approximately 18 inches of floss for wrapping around either your middle or pointer fingers. Leave 2 inches in-between your fingers and gently slide the floss between your teeth. Follow the “C” shape curve of each tooth with the floss and take it below the gumline. Never force the floss as this can hurt your gums and cause them to bleed. Repeat the process between each tooth, rotating the floss on your fingers to use a clean section each time.
